The inauguration ceremony of the Passing on the Torch National Education Activity Series
The inauguration ceremony of the Passing on the Torch National Education Activity Series was held on 21 January 2009 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Wan Chai. Former Chief Executive Mr Donald Tsang, together with various guests from the Mainland, hosted the inauguration ceremony. The ceremony has embarked a new page of the implementation of National Education. Around 600 participants from different social sectors have attended and witnessed this significant event.
The officiating guests of the inauguration ceremony included YOU Lan-tian, Vice President of China Overseas Friendship Association, Yuan Gui-ren, Vice Minister of Ministry of Education, ZHOU Bo, Deputy Director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, WANG Zhi-min, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, SONG Hai, vice-governor of Guangdong Province, WANG Jun-li, Deputy Commander of the People’s Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison, AN Gui-wu, General Secretary of the China Youth Federation, Rita Fan, Member of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee and Michael Suen, Former Secretary for Education.
The launch of the inauguration ceremony has symbolized a new milestone to the implementation of National Education activities. The setting up of the Committee for the “Passing on the Torch” National Education Activity Series was formally announced in the ceremony. The seven chairpersons included Dr Annie Wu from World Trade Centre Club (Hong Kong), Mr YEUNG Yiu-chung from Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers, Mr Adrian Cheng from China Young Leaders, Dr Bunny Chan from Hong Kong Association of Youth Development, Mr Andrew Yao from Hong Kong-Shanghai Youth Exchange Promotion Association, Mr George Lung from Hong Kong Youth Exchange Promotion United Association and Dr Joseph Lee from Wofoo Social Enterprises.
Several primary and secondary schools were invited for theatrical performances, including joint school choir, Chinese dance and Chinese musical ensembles. Feedback from the audience was encouraging.
Following the establishment of the “Passing on the Torch” National Education Activity Series Committee, the Education Bureau will make persistent effort and work in close collaboration with other non-governmental organisations to promote National Education.
